Sarah Newbold
Progressive Therapeutic Counselling

I’m Sarah (she/her), a counsellor, social worker, writer, and founder of Progressive Therapeutic Counselling.

I’ve worked in mental health and community services for more than 20 years across counselling, trauma, relationships, crisis support, and violence prevention.

My work is queer-affirming, trauma-informed, and grounded in the belief that people deserve counselling that feels human, thoughtful, and emotionally safe.

It’s time we moved away from therapy that is overly clinical, performative, and emotionally distant.

My work is grounded in the understanding that people do not exist in isolation from the systems, cultures, technologies, relationships, and power structures that shape their lives.

I don’t believe in ‘specialties’ when it comes to human-centered work, but I do have areas I’m passionate about:

Relationships, intimacy, attachment, and relational harm

Queer relationships, identity, and community

Neurodivergence and living in systems not built for you

Sex, kink, BDSM, consensual power exchange, and alternative relationship structures

AI, parasocial, and digital relationships

Abortion, reproductive experiences, hormonal mental health, peri/menopause, and living in a body that no longer feels predictable or easy to inhabit

Coercive control, emotional abuse, stalking, and relational safety

Grief, burnout, loneliness, and the emotional exhaustion many people carry through modern life

Values are not branding to me.

They shape how people are spoken to, understood, believed, respected, and cared for.

I try to ensure the way I work is genuinely aligned with the values I speak about, both inside and outside the counselling room.

The values below are fundamental to who I am as a person, and as a practitioner:

Anti Racist

Sex & Kink +

Neuro +

Pro choice

Queer +

Disability +
